Holy Trinity Indigenous Relations
Our Reconciliation Circle here at Holy Trinity Catholic has been formed in an effort to address the 59th call to action, from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. "We call upon church parties to the Settlement Agreement to develop ongoing education strategies to ensure that their respective congregations learn about their church’s role in colonization, the history and legacy of residential schools, and why apologies to former residential school students, their families, and communities were necessary'.

This is the final workshop in our series of the four Seasons/Elements events, which was created to support the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This has been created especially for Holy Trinity's parishioners and ministry leaders! Both educational and insightful, this will be a safe space to ask all your questions if you are just beginning to learn about the issues facing our indigenous neighbours, or if you are already aware and would like to expand your knowledge base.
Indigenous Cultural Competency is a half-day workshop identifying historical legislation and colonial events impacting current challenges Indigenous people face in Western Culture, an overview of Residential Schools, and the residual impact inter-generationally. Dates in September coming . . .
This is an interactive workshop, known as the Mapping Exercise,
which invites participants to explore the Indigenous presence
on the map of Canada, prior to Christopher Columbus arriving in 1492.
It also offers an opportunity for learning and reflection on the concept of Terra Nullius -- or “empty land” -- and the Doctrine of Discovery as foundational to colonialism.
(To match how the Vatican refers to the concept in their letter repudiating it (https://www.rcdvictoria.org/indigenous/statement-from-the-vatican-on-the-doctrine-of-discovery)
Participants will walk on the map, reflect on their own presence on it, and discuss how they might respond to what they have learned.
Space is limited to 25 participants at each event, so please book early to avoid disappointment, you can register either by email at [email protected], or by phone at 250.933.8208, refreshments will be provided.
